Lleyton Hewitt booked his place in the second round with a five-set victory over unseeded American Michael Russell.

Hewitt had been made to sweat early on after Russell built up a commanding lead, taking the first two sets 6-3 6-2, but the 25-year-old regained control and took the final three, 6-3 6-3 6-3.

The 19th seed, who has two career grand slam titles at the US Open in 2001 and Wimbledon 2002, will now meet either Canada's Frank Dancevic or Romania's Victor Hanescu in the second round.
