Roddick stuns Federer

Andy Roddick finally ended his long-running losing streak to Roger Federer as the American won 6-2 3-6 6-3 in the final of the Kooyong Classic in Melbourne.

The last time Roddick defeated the world number one was three years ago, in August 2003, and it was Federer’s first defeat since his loss to Andy Murray in the Cincinnati Masters last August.

It was a confidence-boosting victory for Roddick ahead of the Australian Open, which starts on Monday, as he coped with the difficult conditions better than Federer.

The 24-year-old American dominated the first set but Federer rallied in the second to win 6-3.

However, a determined Roddick made a decisive break in the third set to go 5-3 up before winning the next game and the tournament.
