Lloyd backs Murray to land grand slam
England Davis Cup captain John Lloyd believes Andy Murray can win a grand slam title, and he is tipping the Scot to do well at Wimbledon.
Lloyd thinks grass courts may present the 19-year-old’s best chance of breaking into the big time.
“When I first saw him playing really well a couple of years ago he was saying clay and hard court were his favourite surfaces and he thought that was where he would be better,” Lloyd said.
“But personally speaking I think Wimbledon would be a great shout for him. I think he has a great weapon on grass. Out of the four slams Wimbledon is more of a specialist surface and not as many players play on it so the odds are a lot less. Everyone can play on clay or hard courts. I think, as he gets better and stronger, grass is going to be a genuine thing for him.”
Murray’s first outing this year ended in defeat to Ivan Ljubicic in the final of the Qatar Open at the weekend, although his performances were enough to move him up two places to 15th in the world rankings.
