Lloyd: Murray can be a Davis Cup hero
Great Britain’s new Davis Cup captain John Lloyd backed Andy Murray to carry his country into the tournament’s elite world group, single-handedly if he has to.
Lloyd is trying to persuade Tim Henman to come out of Davis Cup retirement and, while Greg Rusedski is available for selection, he does not have too many years left in the sport.
This leaves Murray, the 19-year-old British number one, to stand tall and lead the British fightback Lloyd has planned.
Lloyd said: “For a few years he may come to Davis Cup having to win two singles and possibly a doubles match as well. He may have to win three matches.
“We will have other players capable of backing him up, but if that doesn’t happen he will have to step up to the plate.”
