American Floyd Landis had claimed the leader’s yellow jersey after the penultimate stage of the Tour de France – a 55km time trial from Le Creusot to Montceau-les-Mines.

Landis was third today, behind Ukrainian Serhiy Honchar and his T-Mobile team-mate Andreas Kloeden.

Crucially, Landis finished ahead of previous leader Oscar Pereiro, opening up a 59-second gap over the Spaniard.

The American is now almost certain to claim his first win of cycling’s greatest prize.
