Third seed Lleyton Hewitt booked his place in the second round of the US Open with a straight-sets victory over Spain’s Albert Costa.

The 24-year-old, who won the title at Flushing Meadows in 2001, was never in trouble against Costa, 30, and cruised to a 6-1 6-2 6-1 success in the Arthur Ashe Stadium.

The Australian hit eight aces on his way to victory and smashed 23 winners past his bewildered opponent.
