Lindsay Davenport drew first blood in the all-American women’s final, taking the first set 6-4 against fellow former champion Venus Williams in just 33 minutes.

The top-seeded Davenport, Wimbledon champion in 1999, was looking to avenge her defeat in the 2000 final and, after being held up for an hour by the delayed second men’s semi-final, seemed determined to make up for lost time.
