Big hitters meet for All-American final

Wimbledon will see an all-American final today as former champions Venus Williams and Lindsay Davenport go head to head for the women’s title.

After defending champion Maria Sharapova was knocked out in a shock semi-final defeat at the hands of 14th seed Williams, the pair will battle it out to regain the crown at SW19.

World number one Davenport, who won the tournament in 1999, was threatening to retire from tennis this time last year, while 2000 and 2001 champion Williams has been accused of putting the game second to other interests in recent years.

First on Centre Court however will be second seed Andy Roddick and outsider Thomas Johansson, who will resume their semi-final clash after it was abandoned because of persistent rain last night.

They only managed to play for 32 minutes before the courts were covered shortly after 4pm with Roddick leading 6-5 in the first set.

The winner will play defending champion Roger Federer in the final tomorrow.

Wimbledon officials will be hoping disruption can be kept to the minimum with a damp start forecast but drier weather predicted for later and spells of warm sunshine developing.

Temperatures are predicted to reach 25C.
