Wimbledon queen reigns against Spain's Llagostera Vives

Reigning Wimbledon champion Maria Sharapova has won her first round match 6-2 6-2 against Nuria Llagostera Vives of Spain today.

Reigning Wimbledon champion Maria Sharapova has won her first round match 6-2 6-2 against Nuria Llagostera Vives of Spain today.

The pair had met in the fourth round of the French Open during May, with Sharapova completing a straight-sets victory.

And a similar result looked on the cards today when the Wimbledon champion, seeded second here this year, moved 3-0 ahead following another early break in the second set.

The young Russian was again not afraid to come to the net and produced a number of powerful winners, which gave the 25-year-old world number 36 little chance.

The Spaniard did, however, force a break-point chance of her own in game five after some success down the line with her backhand, only to be denied by what looked a close line-call and then beaten by another fine passing shot as Sharapova again moved up court with great effect.

Despite holding her next service game, Llagostera Vives was unable to delay the inevitable, as another break by the champion secured her a routine 6-2 6-2 victory in 58 minutes.
