The Russian revolution in women’s tennis appears to be expanding further after Alina Jidkova saw off former world number one Serena Williams in the second round of the Generali Ladies Linz in Austria.

The unseeded Russian, ranked only 73rd on the WTA Tour, outclassed third-seed Williams, who benefited from a first-round bye, to book a place in the quarter-finals.

After winning the first set 7-4 on a tie-break, Jidkova took complete control to run out a 7-6 (7-4) 6-2 winner.
