Federer through opener

World number one Roger Federer safely negotiated the opening round of the US Open after a straight sets victory over Spain’s Albert Costa.

The Wimbledon champion won 7-5 6-2 6-4 to progress and will now meet Cyprus’ Marcos Baghdatis, ranked 198 in the world, after he beat Frenchman Olivier Mutis in four sets.
