Campbell fit to race in semi

Darren Campbell is fit enough to run in tonight’s men’s 200 metres semi-final.

Campbell pulled up after qualifying in fourth place in his second round heat last night.

The Olympic silver medallist in Sydney looked to be in considerable pain as he hobbled off the track.

But Campbell, who has been troubled by a hamstring injury and did not qualify from his opening heat in the 100m, confirmed this morning that he will race tonight.

“He’s just phoned in from the doctor’s to say he will be running,” said Great Britain athletics team leader Max Jones. “Obviously, he’s having ongoing treatment.”

Meanwhile, Jones is hoping Abi Oyepitan, who has surprised everyone by making the women’s 200m final, can continue her learning curve tonight.

“She was exceptional last night,” said Jones, of the Londoner, the first British woman to reach an Olympic 200m final since Kathy Cook 20 years ago.
