Sonia O’Sullivan gave a tearful farewell to Irish fans on her final lap of the women’s 5000m final, finishing in last place with a time of 16 minutes, 20.9 seconds.

Gold went to Ethiopia’s Meseret Defar with a time of 14:45.65.
