Unseeded Hantuchova enjoys walkover

Unseeded Daniela Hantuchova became the first player to reach the third round of the women’s singles when her scheduled opponent Elena Bovina withdrew with an abdominal strain.

Bovina, the 20th seed from Russia, had gained a routine 6-1 6-2 first-round victory over Edina Gallovits, of Romania, when she complained of the injury.

This left her next opponent, Slovakia’s Hantuchova, to receive a walkover.
