Agassi to take break after crashing out
After crashing out of the quarter-finals in the ATP Masters Series in Montreal, world number three Andre Agassi announced he will take two weeks off before the US Open.
The American was beaten in three sets by eighth-seeded German Rainer Schuettler, who avenged a straight-sets rout in the final of the Australian Open.
“I won’t be playing in Cincinnati,” Agassi said ahead of next week’s Masters Series event. “I’ve had enough matches.
“I’ll spend a couple of weeks getting ready for the Open and roll the dice.”
There had been talk that Agassi is nursing a hip injury, but he shrugged off any physical concerns, saying of Schuettler: “He outplayed me from the baseline.
“I got caught flat-footed a few times.”
The 33-year-old Las Vegas native won four of his first five tournaments this year, including the Australian Open for his eighth career Grand Slam.
But he has not won a title since the US Men’s Clay Court Championships at the end of April.
