Venus and Rubin through, Davenport takes first set

Number five seed Lindsay Davenport (Usa) has won her first set 6-3 against Rita Grande (Ita).

Number four seed Venus Williams (Usa) won 6-4 6-1 against Katarina Srebotnik (Slo). Williams wrapped up the second set 6-1 for a comfortable victory and passage into the third round.

Number seven seed Chanda Rubin (Usa) won 6-4 6-4 against Amy Frazier (Usa).
