Super Serena stuns Clijsters
Serena Williams staged an against-all-odds comeback to beat Belgium’s Kim Clijsters and book her place in an Australian Open final against elder sister Venus.
The world number one trailed 5-1 in the deciding set – but Clijsters froze, twice sacrificing match points, and Williams took full advantage and ran out a 4-6 6-3 7-5 winner.
She put together an incredible run of six consecutive games to come back from the brink of defeat and keep her dreams of a fourth consecutive Grand Slam title on track.
Williams won at the French Open, Wimbledon and the US Open last year but has never before reached the final at Melbourne Park.
The 21-year-old revealed how she thought she had lost the chance this year after Clijsters moved two breaks up and was in control.
“Honestly I don’t know how I was able to win,” she admitted.
“I didn’t expect to win at that point. I just said to myself: ‘Keep fighting and win each point’. And the next thing I know, the match is over.”
Williams missed out on the tournament last year with an ankle injury sustained in the warm-up tournament in Sydney.
She is desperate to win in Australia to claim what she has dubbed the ‘Serena Slam’.
“I really, really want to win this more than anything,” she added.
“But I’m sure Venus does too. It’s going to be hard. I picked her to win this before the tournament began.”
