Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario has announced her retirement after a glittering career which saw her win four Grand Slams and capture numerous other titles.

Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario has announced her retirement after a glittering career which saw her win four Grand Slams and capture numerous other titles.

The 30-year-old, who turned professional in June 1985 and won 29 titles, confirmed her departure at a press conference near Barcelona.

The Spaniard won three French Open titles, the US Open once and appeared in eight other Grand Slam finals.

Her most recent competitive appearance was at last month's Fed Cup when she failed to prevent Slovakia beating Spain 3-1.
