Venus injury ends hopes of all-Williams final
Hopes of an all-Williams decider disappeared when Venus retired with a leg injury after just five games of her WTA Championship semi-final against Kim Clijsters.
But sister Serena booked her place in the final after coming from behind to beat Jennifer Capriati 2-6 6-4 6-4 in the season-ending tournament in Los Angeles.
Venus, the second seed, sustained the injury to her left calf during Friday’s 7-5 6-4 quarter-final victory over Monica Seles and came out heavily strapped.
“Basically, I twisted (the calf) during the match against Monica,” she said. “At that point, I kept going.
“There was no problem. I didn’t really feel the effects until last night as I was sitting in bed and I realised my leg was hurting.”
