Pistol Pete not finished yet
Pete Sampras showed he hasn't lost his big match temperament or his brilliant array of shots as he defeated Tommy Haas to reach the quarter-finals of the US Open.
Sampras' 7-5 6-4 6-7 (5-7) 7-5 win over the German was his 200th match in a Grand Slam.
Perhaps the most telling statistic was Sampras's 80 winners compared to only 36 for the German.
But when Haas, just 24, took the third set in a tie-breaker it seemed he might have the energy to knock Sampras out.
Even when he had to get treatment on his troublesome right forearm in the fourth set, Haas looked like he had the ability and stamina to take the American to five sets.
However, Sampras rallied, recovering some of his trademark athleticism and was always able to produce the thunderous winners.
The relief on his face at the end of the match was clear, and he will relish his quarter-final match against young compatriot Andy Roddick.
