Fifth seed Tommy Haas has withdrawn from Wimbledon in order to spend time with his family following an accident involving his parents.

The German was tipped to do well at the All England Club later this month, but has decided to stay in America following the motorcycle crash.

Haas’ parents were on a bike hit by a car on June 8 in the Sarasota area of Florida, where Haas now lives.

Although his mother is set to be released from hospital in the next few days, his father remains in a critical condition.

‘‘Wimbledon, with its tradition and prestige, has always been a special event, but my place is with my family during these difficult times,’’ Haas said.

‘‘This is a critical time for my parents, and I need to be at their side.’’
