The 13th seeded American beat Zabaleta, from Argentina, 6-3 5-7 6-3 6-3.

Roddick, who shot to prominence last season with a string of notable victories on the ATP Tour, next meets Ivan Ljubicic in round two.

The Croatian beat Bohdan Ulihrach of the Czech Republic in five gruelling sets in his first round encounter.

Elsewhere, seventeenth seed Carlos Moya bowed out after retiring hurt in the deciding fifth game of his first round tie with Agustin Calleri, the scores were 6-2 7-6 (7-1) 4-6 6-7 (4-7) 1-0.
