Greg Rusedski has won his first round match at Australian Men's Hardcourt Championships at Memorial Drive, Adelaide.

Sixth seed Rusedski defeated Spain's Jacobo Diaz 6-3 7-6 in the event which marks the start of the 2002 ATP Champions Race.

Thomas Enqvist also won his opening-round match, beating Marcelo Rios 6-0

6-3.

Seventh seed Andreas Vinciguerra was knocked out by Spain's Alberto Martin

6-3 6-4.

Eighth seed Ivan Ljubicic of Croatia also went through to the next round, beating American Michael Russell 7-6, 7-6.

Australian Richard Fromberg advanced into the main draw with a 6-4 6-4 qualifying final victory against Frenchman Gregory Carraz.

Fromberg will play tournament top seed Tim Henman on Tuesday while second seed Pete Sampras takes on fellow American Todd Martin.

Australian Mark Philippoussis also plays on Tuesday against Frenchman Julien Boutter.
