Britain’s Martin Lee booked a date with second seed Guillermo Canas after beating Frenchman Nicolas Thomann 6-4 6-2 in the first round of the Brazil Open in Salvador.

Argentinian Canas had little trouble in advancing at the £275,000 ATP event when winning 6-3 6-4 against Brazilian wild card Thiago Alves.

Any hopes of having two British players in the second round faded, however, when Jamie Delgado went down 6-3 7-5 to Markus Hantschk of Germany.

Third seed Vladimir Voltchkov, last year’s Wimbledon semi-finalist, crashed out after going down 7-5 7-5 to unheralded Paraguayan Ramon Delgado.
