US Open: Henman survives five-set opener

British number one Tim Henman survived an early scare to progress to the second round of the US Open in Flushing Meadows last night.

Henman took a two-set lead over unknown qualifier Jan Vacek, but the Czech stepped up his game and won the next two to take the match to a fifth-set decider.

The Englishman eventually won the final set 6-3 after three hours and 52 minutes of play.

Elsewhere, there were no major surprises on the opening day, with both Andre Agassi and Pat Rafter progressing comfortably.
