The kit apparently went missing while the 32-year-old was using the gym and spa at the Foxhills hotel in Ottershaw, Surrey, on Sunday.

The theft happened a day after he took part in the Olympics men’s road race event.

Wiggins, who will take part in the Olympics cycling time trials event at Hampton Court today, wrote in a message on Sunday: “Watch your kit at the Foxhills spa... there is a tea leaf about.”

A spokesman for Foxhills told the BBC: “Upon returning back to the locker room, it seems that cycling fever has well and truly hit the Surrey club as the Official Team GB training lycra were nowhere to be seen.

“It seems an over-zealous fan has scored a fantastic London 2012 souvenir.”

In another tweet yesterday, Wiggins wrote: “Gotta delete tweet Re the thief, bad PR, never mind my kit though!”
