David Gillick last night declared his intention to continue his athletics career despite being ruled out of the Olympic Games in London through injury.

The 400m specialist missed out on last year’s World Championships in South Korea with a torn soleus muscle and he suffered a repeat of the injury last March before tearing the other major calf muscle, the gastrocnemius, two months later.

All in all, he missed almost three months training at a time of year when most athletes were fine-tuning their preparations for the Games but the 29-year old, two-time European Indoor champion is now looking beyond London.
