McDonagh brothers top star-studded bill
Fermoy has been synonymous with boxing over the years. Fans will recall with affection the visit of Olympic silver medallist Shawn O'Sullivan with a Canadian team, en route to the Los Angeles Olympics in 1984, which drew fans from through the country to the Twilight Zone.
Since then, Fermoy boxing has been thriving under the direction of John Mahon and Pat Flynn, who were recently appointed tutors and who will be involved in preparing coaches from now on.
And one of the new coaches at the Fermoy club is Aine Houlihan the first lady coach and from reports destined to become one of the leading coaches in the country.
The fruits of their labours will be evident at the Rowing Club tonight when local boxers will feature prominently on a 15-bout bill.
McDonagh brothers, John and Brian, feature on the top of the bill contests. Both have won Munster titles in the past, and in recent years have been involved in spectacular finals against the opponents they face again tonight. When John and tonight's opponent, Paul Duncliffe from Fr Horgan's, met in two finals they were both voted the best finals of the tournament. Each have a victory over the other and tonight should turn up another thrilling contest.
Similarly, Brian and James Coburn from Clonmel have had some thrilling encounters with the spoils shared equally, and tonight's return is eagerly awaited.
The McDonaghs have been through the mill. Apart from their numerous appearances in Munster championships, they are both beaten finalists at national level.
Jody McNamara from Fermoy, a Munster champion and national finalist, was beaten in the semi-finals of this year's national under-21 championships and he goes back into battle tonight against Riverstown welterweight Damien O'Riordan.
There will be a lot of interest in Sean Cahill from Fermoy who makes his debut against Niall Bohane from The Glen, and also in the contest between Arthur McDonagh and Damien Brady from Cobh. Mark Flynn meets Michael Kalilec from St Colman's.
The finals held over from the Munster intermediate championships at Clonmel on Sunday were decided at the Premier League session in the Glen Boxing Club on Tuesday night.
At light welter Mark Simmons (Sunnyside) beat Ian Walsh (St Paul's, Waterford) 4-1. Gary O'Sullivan (Sunnyside) beat Tomas Jacobs (Fr Horgan's) and he will feature on tonight's bill at Fermoy when he meets Gary Collins (Dungarvan) in what promises to be a close light middleweight contest.
At heavyweight, all-action Waterford man Eddie Power beat David Ahern from Clonmel in a thriller.
