McCarthy honoured with award

One of the country’s most exciting athletics prospects, teenager David McCarthy, is the twelfth and final monthly Park Hotel Waterford Sport Star winner for 2004.

A member of West Waterford A.C., the seventeen year old St. Augustines College Transition Year student has won the prestigious accolade for December following his memorable victory in the Reebok International in Liverpool, when he defeated a quality field to romp to the most impressive of victories.

That Liverpool win climaxed his most successful ever year since he introduced himself to the sport. During 2004 he recorded wins at county, provincial, and national level both on the track and in cross country and is already being spoken about in the same way the likes of Eamonn Coughlan and John Treacy were before they went on to take world athletics by storm.
