Gillick goes to World University Games

European Indoor 400m Champion David Gillick will be Ireland’s flag bearer at the World University Games in Izmir today.

Gillick and Tomas Coman are set to lead the Irish challenge on the track in the 400metres with Paul Hession, silver medallist at the last University Games two years ago, Roisin McGettigan, Eileen O’Keeffe and Derval O’Rourke all flying directly from the World Championships in Helsinki.

The highly rated women’s soccer side tonight take on Chinese Tapei at 4.30pm Irish time. The men’s team will also be in action, with a tough assignment against Russia at 6.30pm.

The women’s basketball team were the first of the Irish squad in action and lost to the Lithuanian student side (83-59).
