Downes goes after McCarthy record in Mallow

INTERNATIONAL runner John Downes is among the big entry expected for the popular Irish Sugar Mallow ‘10’ road race on Sunday.

The event is also the first race in the John Buckley Sports/Munster 10-mile Spring Classics Series.

It commences at 12.30pm with entries and changing facilities at the local youth club.

Entry fee is €10, taken on the morning. As well as a comprehensive prize list, there will be a T-shirt for all who take part.

John Downes set a course record of 50:51 when winning over the same distance in Armagh last October and if conditions are favourable, he could threaten Martin McCarthy’s best of 50:47 for the current Mallow course.

A 10km non-competitive walk also takes place on Sunday. This starts at 12 noon and there will be a raffle for valuable prizes. Entry fee for the walk is €5.
