Nugent wins cross-country

Pat Nugent of the St Mary’s club in Clare, the winner of cross-country and indoor titles earlier in the season, added the Munster Masters’ road championship to his tally on a windswept course at Lisdoonvarna yesterday.

After Martin Drake of Cork had led out the first mile, the Clareman took control and despite the best efforts of Drake and his East Cork clubmate, Denis McCarthy, he held on for a seven-second victory in a time of 21:32 for the four miles.

Joan Hough of St Finbarr’s, running in the F45 category, took the lead in the women’s two-mile race after halfway and at the finish had just two seconds in hand over Tracy Guilfoyle from Clare, 12:06 to 12:08.
