Confident Gillick targets Euro medal

EUROPEAN 400m Indoor champion David Gillick has targeted a medal in the continent’s outdoor games in Gothenburg as his primary goal for the 2006 track season.

While the World Indoor Games also take place next year, in Moscow, the 21-year-old said yesterday that he would be making a podium finish in the European Championships his first priority.

“You have to aim high. That’s the only way to do it and that’s how I’m looking at it,” said the Dubliner. “Gothenburg is my main goal for 2006. There is the World Indoors but I want to have one goal, one focus and that starts now.

“I feel personally that if I stay injury free, that I’ll run a fast time.”

Gillick was speaking at the 48th Texaco Sportstars awards in Dublin’s Burlington Hotel where he picked up the athletics award and he admitted that it was a dream come true to be there.

“You don’t think you’ll get one yourself and it’s brilliant to be acknowledged with other athletes who have done so well in their own sports.”
