Ryan to line out in relay at world championships

He flew back from Australia to join other members of the Irish team at Heathrow Airport. and confirmed he will compete with the 4 x 400m team.

“To be honest the indoors had not been a priority this year but I had qualified for the 60m and it is all part of getting ready for the summer,” he said.

“I had a pretty good stretch of training in Australia and I ran four races, two quite good and I had one bad day, but I know what went wrong. Getting it right for the summer is what it is all about.”

Meanwhile Corkman Brian Murphy (UCC) is somewhat bewildered about the make up of the 4 x 400m team and the fact that there is no back up.

“It is unusual, to say the least,” he said. “David Gillic could be left watching if someone is forced to pull out.”

He was runner-up in the 200m in 22.52 secs at the Irish universities indoor championships in Nenagh and went on to finish fourth in the Indoor Championships of Ireland in the Odyssey Centre in Belfast.

He came away from there as the fourth fastest in Ireland this year in the absence of Paul McKee.
