Top prizes at road race

A total prize fund of €8,000 will be on offer at the 25th annual Rockford Rooftile Four-Mile Road Race in Tinryland village, Carlow tomorrow at 2pm.

The event has attracted a string of top Irish athletes. Leading international athlete Seamus Power from the Kilmurry-Ibrickane club in Co. Clare will be one of the favourites to win, along with fellow international Peter Matthews from Dundrum South Dublin, who won this race in 2001.

Over the years, the ‘Rockford’ has produced a string of very fast times and the long-standing course record of 18 minutes 46 seconds is sure to be tested with a bonus of €500 for any athlete who dips Dave Taylor’s record 1982 mark.

Tomorrow’s main event will commence at 2pm and will be preceded at 1.00 by races for boys and girls under 11, 13 and 15.
