Gebrselassie targets third gold medal

The man affectionately known as the ‘Little Emperor’ finished second behind compatriot Kenenisa Bekele at the 2003 World Championships in Paris and was gracious in defeat.

Gebrselassie would dearly love to add another Olympic gold to his vast medal collection, but he is a true patriot who would also celebrate if one of his team-mates clinched victory in the Greek capital.

“It is not an easy thing to win the Olympics. You never know what will happen,” said the 31-year-old.

“But Ethiopians first run for their country and then go for individual (glory).

“If I win, of course I will be happy. But I will be sad if someone from another country wins. If Ethiopians win I will be okay.”

Gebrselassie, who has broken 18 world records during his long career, feels he has improved on his performances from last year, but admits there is still room for improvement.

He produced a strong finish to overhaul Australian Craig Mottram in London last month, covering the last 800 metres in one minute and 52 seconds.

“My speed is okay, not that bad,” he added. “I am still trying to get my speed back and at the Olympics it is important to have enough speed.

“But it’s not 100%, not like six years ago.”
