Here we go again. For the second time in 2026, Kilkenny were hammered by Galway in Pearse Stadium. A 10,489 crowd saw 14 different scorers in maroon and white romp home.
Before John Donnelly’s sending off at the start of the second half, Kilkenny were clinging on. Afterwards? It was an exercise in mitigation.
A shoulder to the head of Galway captain Darren Morrissey saw Colm Lyons immediately flash a red card. A team that has fully embraced the running game made the most of that enormous advantage. In doing so, the second half became a non-contest.
This tit-for-tat, tight and tactical opening half really lurched towards the home outfit when Aaron Niland rose above Paddy Deegan and took off. Mikey Carey’s bid to stop him resulted in a black card and a penalty. Rory Burke slotted it and two more points saw Galway lead 2-8 to 0-9 at the break.

Oranmore’s Burke was brilliant on his debut. His opening goal stemmed from a terrific ball from Tiernan Killeen. He rolled Deegan with only one thing on his mind. Aidan Tallis couldn’t deny it.
Kilkenny would have been disappointed at this point having played with the breeze from the start. It was level before Burke’s placed ball, but Derek Lyng would have been exasperated by their inability to produce a green flag of their own.
In total, they squandered three opportunities. Gearóid Dunne, who replaced Tom Phelan before throw-in, failed to convert a clear chance. With half-time approaching, Darach Fahy did superbly to deny Eoin Cody one-on-one before Daithà Burke gratefully gathered the ball in a goalmouth scramble and booted it away. Carey teed up Jordan Molloy, only for his rifled effort to fly over.
Both sides conceded puckouts and flooded numbers back the field. Darren Morrissey went to Cody early on while Cillian Trayers’ education continued with a matchup on TJ Reid.
Padraic Mannion and Gavin Lee gave Galway a bright start. After an 18-point hammering in their league meeting, Kilkenny turned to what they know. Enter 38-year-old legend TJ Reid. He yanked his first free. Then he found his form. Repeated long balls looked promising and he ultimately converted seven frees and one late penalty.
Micheál Donoghue’s rebuild was perfectly summarised by championship debutant Jason Rabbitte’s goal. Cian Daniels came thundering down the centre with options off his shoulder to his left and right. The finish to the near post was warmly received by a sizeable home Salthill support who are finally beginning to believe in this group.
With an U20 clash mid-week, Donoghue made the most of his bench. Conor Cooney and Darragh Neary scored two points each, Evan Niland, Colm Molloy and Thomas Monaghan made their mark too. Conor Whelan was sent off for a second yellow and it hardly mattered.
They advance with added conviction to a bright future. As for Kilkenny? Their prospects have rarely looked so uncertain.
