PwC All-Star nominee Ballyhanuis' Jack Coyne has been appointed captain for the Mayo senior football team for the upcoming season taking the reins from Castlebar's Paddy Durcan.

Coyne becomes the latest Ballyhanuis clubman to lead the county team following in the footsteps of four time All-Star Keith Higgins who was named captain in 2021.

Belmullet's Ryan O'Donoghue and Knockmore's Darren McHale have been named as vice-captains by new manager Andy Moran.

The 25-year-old defender captained the Mayo U20's and was a standout presence during Kevin McStay's tenure.

Coyne made his senior debut in 2021 when he came on as a subsitution in the Connacht SFC clash against Leitrim. He has gone on to establish himself in the full back-line making 21 League and 20 championships for Mayo to date. He won a Connacht SFC medal in 2021 and FBD and Allianz League medals in 2023 while also winning a Mayo IFC title with his club in 2022.

Speaking on the new captain Mayo GAA Chairperson Seamus Tuohy is delighted for Coyne.

“Jack goes about his business in an understated but extremely effective and composed manner.  He is an exemplary individual who has proven himself as a teak-tough defender over recent years.

"Jack has been an integral member of the Mayo senior football panel for the past few years, and his leadership both on and off the pitch is outstanding.”
