Charleville finish strong to progress to junior semi-final
This McCarthy Insurances Co JAFC quarter final at Glenville in Saturday was played in wet conditions. Both sides had their moments. Charleville dominated the opening 12 minutes but were unable to get on the scoresheet. Ballygarvan opened with an Evan O'Connor point. The South East side hit a purple patch with their second point on 10 minutes by Niall Dowd. Jesse Smith saved well from Evan O'Connor.
Good play by Niall Dowd, Evan O'Connor and Dylan O'Connor led to the inrushing Niall Dowd kicking a fine two-pointer. Good play again by Niall Dowd and Piaras O'Halloran led to a foul and a second two-pointer by Dowd, 0-6 to 0-0.
In the 13th minute, Jack Callaghan had a Charleville two-point free. Further Charleville pressure saw Jack Callaghan set up Darren Casey, 0-6 to 0-3. A foul on Darren Butler led to another two-point free by Jack Callaghan. In the closing moments a patient build up by Oran O'Connell, Jack Meade Darren Casey and Jack Buckley led to a foul with Callaghan levelling at half time, 0-6 each.
Ballygarvan introduced the injured Sean Brady early in the second half. Evan O'Connor had an early wide. Charleville hit the front when Conor Buckley worked well for Jack Buckley who kicked over. Niall Dowd levelled after good play by Sean Brady. They were deadlocked at 0-8 each.
In the 42nd minute Evan O'Connor pointed a free. Further pressure saw Ballygarvan add another point by Sean Brady, 0-10 to 0-8. The final 10 minutes saw the better balanced Charleville side hit seven points to just one for Ballygarvan.
After 55 minutes Charleville were 0-12 to 0-11 clear. Ballygarvan's Sean Brady cut through from the '40' in search of a goal. He was denied by Jesse Smith from close range, conceding a '45 off the upright that was cleared. Great points by Robert Carroll (2) and Darragh Fitzgibbon after good play by James O'Brien saw the Avondhu side have a close win and into a semi final meeting with Kilmacabea.
Best for Charleville were Jesse Smith, Jack Meade, Danny Flynn, Oran O'Connell, Jack Buckley, Robert Carroll, Darren Casey, Jack Callaghan and Darren Butler. For Ballygarvan, Piaras O'Halloran, Sean Brady, Niall Dowd Dylan O'Connor Evan O'Connor and Sean O'Donovan did well.
