Liam Cahill set to be offered new term as Tipperary hurling manager

It is over 10 weeks since Tipperary's All-Ireland final win and there had been murmurings in the county due to Cahill's current deal having elapsed and a new one not yet ratified.

Liam Cahill is expected to be offered a new term of at least another two years as Tipperary senior hurling manager.

The All-Ireland SHC winning boss’s three-year term has elapsed and the absence of a ratification over 10 weeks after the final victory over Cork has prompted some murmurings in the county.

A series of discussions between Cahill, his management team and county board have taken place in recent weeks and more are expected as the final details of the plan for the upcoming season are being agreed.

The Ballingarry man has also been attending club games and county board sources insist there is no panic about him remaining in charge after overseeing this year’s remarkable victory in the season following the county’s failure to emerge from Munster in 2024.

However, it is known that Tipperary operated on a tighter budget this past season. Unlike the provincial champions Cork and Kilkenny or Munster runners-up Limerick, Tipperary did not go on a pre-championship training camp this season and their one night out of the county amounted to a pre-season gathering in Kilworth.

The county board will be keen to avoid a repeat of October 2010 when Liam Sheedy surprisingly stepped down after also leading Tipperary to a Liam MacCarthy Cup in his third season. Sheedy and his management team resigned “due to various personal and work commitments”.

There are tentative plans to arrange a county board meeting in the first half of October where Cahill will not surprisingly receive a ringing endorsement from club delegates to stay at the helm. Tipperary are also due to announce a new U20 football manager following the departure of Niall Fitzgerald in August.

Providing he is agreeable to stay on, it is hoped Cahill will retain his 2025 management team of coach Mikey Bevans, selectors Declan Laffan, TJ Ryan and assistant coach David Herity along with strength and conditioning coach Angelo Walsh and performance coach Cathal Sheridan, who also worked with All-Ireland SFC winners Kerry this past season.

After three years in charge of Waterford, Cahill succeeded Colm Bonnar in August 2022 and guided Tipperary out of Munster only to lose to Galway in an All-Ireland quarter-final. The 2024 disappointment was consigned to the past by this season’s stunning run of six consecutive SHC wins culminating in July’s stunning All-Ireland final win over Cork.

Tipperary will travel to Cape Town in South Africa for their team holiday in the middle of November.
