As the GAA world reacts to the inter-county retirement of Cork hurling great Patrick Horgan, Taoiseach Micheál Martin has thanked the Glen Rovers clubman for his dedication and contribution to the sport, and in particular, Cork.
Horgan has brought the curtain down on an 18-year record-breaking career in Cork red, having made his debut back in 2008.
'Hoggie' retires holding the honours of being the all-time leading senior hurling championship scorer, while the four-time All Star also won four Munster championships and one National League medal with the Rebels.
"Thank you, Patrick Horgan, for your extraordinary and phenomenal contribution to hurling, and to Cork," Martin wrote in a post on
"An icon of the game, you represented your county and community with dedication, determination and sportsmanship."
The Glen also thanked one of their greatest sons in a post on X, writing: "Best wishes to Patrick as he retires from inter-county hurling.
"What a wonderful servant to Cork and to our club. Wishing Patrick and his family well, looking forward to many more days in the green, black and gold.
"Patrick, thank you for making us all so proud."
Club chairman Liam Martin added: "Today is truly the end of an era, and on behalf of the officers, members, and supporters of Glen Rovers.
"He leaves the inter-county stage having adorned the hurling fields of Ireland with no little skill, ability, and above all else, immense character, which always shone like a beacon.
"We have, as a club, been immensely proud of all of his achievements in the Rebel Red from his earliest days as a three-year Cork minor.
"His legacy as an outstanding hurler is without question.
"We should also acknowledge Patrick’s wife Ashley, son Jack, and indeed, not forgetting his parents, Pat and Anne, who have been a constant support to Patrick throughout his hurling career.
"Finally, we are looking forward to many more years of Patrick’s active involvement in our club.
"Ní bheidh a leithéid arís ann."
