Keith Higgins has been appointed the new manager of the Mayo U20 team on a two-year term.
The Ballyhaunis man enjoyed a memorable career with the Mayo footballers – he also played hurling for the county - from 2005 until he decided to retire in January 2021, winning eight Connacht titles, one league title, four All-Star awards as well as being named young footballer of the year in 2006.
Higgins turned to coaching after hanging up his boots and he joined the Mayo U20 management team under the guidance of Peadar Gardiner in 2023, helping them end their silverware drought when they reclaimed the Connacht title in 2024.
And following a meeting of the Mayo GAA Executive and club delegates on Wednesday night, Higgins was ratified to take over the side following Gardiner’s decision to end his time in charge following their All-Ireland semi-final defeat to Louth.
“Keith Higgins was an outstanding dual player for Mayo and I would like to wish him and his backroom team well in the weeks and months ahead,” said Cathaoirleach of Mayo GAA Seamus Tuohy.
“Keith was one of the finest defenders of his generation and I know he will bring all that expertise, determination and commitment to his new role.” Higgins will have former Mayo stars Kevin McLoughlin and David Drake along with Kilmeena’s Mark Ryan as his selectors.
Meanwhile it has also been confirmed at a board meeting on Wednesday night that Diarmuid Mullins will replace Donal O’Grady as Limerick minor hurling manager while Evan Loftus will remain on as U20 manager.
