Hastings Insurance MacHale Park is currently being assessed for storm damage ahead of Mayo’s Division 1 game against Galway on Sunday.

The Irish Examiner has learned the Castlebar venue is currently out of bounds as health and safety officers check to see if it is safe to host the Round 2 fixture. It is believed repairs will be required to a number of areas following Storm Eowyn last Friday.

MacHale Park is set to stage Connacht Rugby’s sold-out United Rugby Championship clash with Munster on Saturday, March 29. Before that, Mayo are also due to host Tyrone there on February 6, Kerry on March 1 and Donegal on March 23.

Last Friday, Connacht GAA’s inflated Air Dome in Bekan outside Ballyhaunis was destroyed by the storm. Provincial secretary John Prenty has insisted the facility will be rebuilt.

Also on Friday, Mayo hurlers' Division 3 game against Cavan, which was due to take place in MacHale Park on Saturday, was cancelled because of damage to a lighting tower. On Sunday afternoon, Castlebar Mitchels were forced to close its clubhouse, Sportlann, and the car park adjacent to the grounds for 24 hours.
