Down's Oisin Savage will undergo surgery on Tuesday following a broken jaw which he suffered during the Taillteann Cup semi-final against Sligo.

Savage had only been on the pitch a matter of minutes when he fell to the Croke Park turf heavily after being hit by the swinging forearm of Nathan Mullen. It was a challenge for which the Sligo half-back was shown a straight red card by referee Derek O'Mahoney.

The forward, who turns 21 this week, was treated on the pitch for seven minutes before being stretchered off. His club, Loughinisland, confirmed that he spent Sunday night in hospital.

"Good news in that our Oisin is on his way home from Dublin," the club posted to Facebook on Monday.

"Not so good news is that he will be up for surgery on his broken jaw (on Tuesday).

"Thank you to everyone in Down GAA, Croke Park and all the medics for looking after him so well. Speedy recovery Oisin and we will keep the 21st celebrations on hold."

Savage will miss the Tailteann Cup final between Down and Laois on July 13.
