Reigning league and county champions, Sarsfields, continued from where they ended last season as they got the better of Kanturk in the opening round in Division 1 of the Red FM League Cork Hurling Leagues.

There was no separating the sides when they met in championship last summer but the away side, inspired by Daniel Hogan who hit 0-9, seven  from placed balls, did enough to get the win in the end. An early goal from Liam O’Keeffe had given Kanturk the early advantage, but a Brian Murphy goal for Sars on the stroke of half time gave them a 1-9 to 1-7 lead. A second goal from O’Keeffe, along with a 0-11 contribution from Brian O’Sullivan brought Kanturk close, but not close enough as Sars keeper, Ben Graham, hit two from frees to help them to a 1-20 to 2-14 win.
