Midway through the second half as Castlehaven were striving to claw back a four-point half-time deficit, Brian Hurley pleaded for leniency. He was desperately searching for a safe space and suitable 45 placement on the sod while St Brigid’s forward Bobby Nugent stood nearby in antagonism.

Much of Hurley’s career was distilled down to its core in FBD Semple Stadium. He was battling the elements, the frost-covered turf conspiring against placed ball kicking. He was battling a superior opponent; the Connacht champions were inspired in the opening half-hour.
