Lisgoold make history with first-ever East Cork triumph

HISTORIC MOMENT: Lisgoold GAA club had never won the East Cork JAFC.

Lisgoold 2-9 Carraig na bhFear 0-10

Lisgoold wrote their own page of club history by defeating Carraig na bhFear to win their first ever Michael O'Connor Motor Factors East Cork junior 'A' football championship crown in miserable weather conditions at Glenville.

It took late goals from Caolan O'Brien and Tom Savage to decide this competitive contest. Ultimately Lisgoold's passing game paid rich dividends in the second period when they managed the game better playing into the wind and turned their one point interval advantage into a five points winning margin.

Man of the match John Cashman, who finished with six points, had given his side the nod just before the break as they retired 0-5 to 0-4 ahead. Earlier, Caolan O'Brien, James O'Driscoll and excellent team captain Shaun Murphy had added to Cashman's long range free.

Carraig na nhFear, who had Paul Sheehan very influential, found the range through three Oisin Crowley efforts and a fine finish from the boot of Billy Connolly.

Scores advanced to a stalemate position of 0-7 each by minute 40 as impressive sub Paul O'Keeffe added to two Crowley efforts for Carraig' and Cashman responded with two Lisgoold frees.

The major breakthrough only arrived after 52 minutes when Caoaln O' Brien found the Carraig' net from close range after Cashman's free hung in the air.

Tadhg O'Donoghue answered with two superb points at the other rend, before sub Tom Savage goaled from close range four minutes into stoppage time to give Lisgoold the breathing space they needed to survive 9 minutes of injury time.
