Dromtarriffe got the better of their near neighbours Boherbue in the Bon Secours Cork IAFC quarter-final at a damp Kanturk today.
A big crowd came in for this tense Duhallow derby, which was level six times in a tight opening-half (0-6 apiece).
Key to the victory was Evan Murphy’s goal two minutes after the break, when his speculative shot from 40 metres ended up in the net. The green flag, which arrived a minute after centre-back Jack Murphy’s point, regained a lead Dromtarriffe held in the sixth minute.
Boherbue set about reducing the gap with the wind at their backs, and brought it back to two. But no sooner had they done so, Dromtarriffe re-established control, despite not scoring for over 20 minutes.
They kicked three unanswered points from effective sub Tomás Howard, the ever-reliable Conor O’Callaghan and a second for Brian O’Keeffe.
This was their biggest lead, 1-10 to 0-8, before Boherbue sub Bryan Herlihy had the final say.
Dromtarriffe, who were knocked out at the quarter-final stage last year by a single point to Mitchelstown, now have a semi-final with the same north Cork opposition to look forward to, with revenge sure to be on their mind.
A nip-and-tuck first-half gave the crowd plenty to cheer about. Placed-kicker David O’Connor was chief scorer for last season’s beaten semi-finalists Boherbue firing five of their six.
Dromtarriffe, meanwhile, had a much greater selection of contributors (seven in total overall), five of their flags were from play courtesy of Darren O’Connor, Daniel O’Keeffe, Brian O’Keeffe, Evan Murphy and Conor O’Callaghan.
