Waterford PIHC: O'Brien leads Ferrybank into senior hurling ranks

Waterford Premier Intermediate Hurling Final 

Ferrybank 2-22 Cappoquin 1-14 

A whopping 1-14 from former Déise panellist Mark O'Brien inspired Ferrybank to the inaugural Waterford Premier Intermediate Hurling title.

Captain Robbie Carew hailed his team mate for playing through the pain barrier. 

"He pulled his hamstring so he was in ice chambers up in Thurles all week. That man doesn't stop working. We'll all go off on the beer for a couple of weeks but MOB won't. He'll go working harder."

The boys in green took charge in the second half as they outscored Cappoquin 1-11 to 0-1 in the last 26 minutes. Super-sub MJ Sutton scored 1-1 while target man Ruaidhri McGarrity got four points from play and won a second-half penalty.

Cappoquin led 11-10 at the interval with Eoghan Murray knocking over six points. Killian O'Sullivan had two goal chances but was denied by Cormac O'Driscoll and Stephen O'Kane.

Gavin Fives found the top corner 30 seconds into the second half (1-11 to 0-10). Ferrybank got back on level terms three minutes later when McGarrity won a penalty and O'Brien buried it. 

Fives and Eoghan Murray put Cappoquin 1-13 to 1-11 ahead but they went 22 minutes without a score. 

With twelve minutes left, a Ruaidhri McGarrity catch set up a Ferrybank goal for MJ Sutton. O'Brien was unerring from dead balls as Robbie Carew went up the steps to lift the Pat Hunt Cup.
