‘Corn Uí Mhuirí isn’t a stepping stone for the county minors like before’

Lowering the minor age grade to U17 has left post-primary footballers “between a rock and a hard place”, according to St Brendan’s College manager, Gary McGrath.

Under the old system, where the age of eligibility for minor was U18, competitions such as the Corn Uí Mhuirí (Munster U19 A football) were used by Leaving Certificate students as a platform to impress county minor managers, but with minor now at U17, McGrath feels it is very hard for students to prioritise minor inter-county football in fifth-year and then give an equal amount of time to school football in Leaving Cert year.
